Buying a used BMW means treating yourself to the driving pleasure of a true German premium brand (precise steering, balanced chassis, smooth turbo engines) without paying the price of a new one. But let's be honest: a BMW costs more to maintain than a Toyota or a Honda, and you need to know that before you buy. The good news is that rapid depreciation over the first three years means a BMW that is 3 to 5 years old often trades at 40-50% of its original price. You are buying a lot of car for your money.
The items to watch on BMW engines (N20, B46, B58, N55): timing chain, oil pan gasket, electric water pump and oil filter housing. On the V8s (the N63 in older X5 and 5 Series models), oil leaks and consumption are more frequent. Nothing dramatic with a clear maintenance history, and that is exactly what we check before putting a BMW on our lot in Saint-Joseph-du-Lac. Plan on quality synthetic oil, performance brakes (and therefore pricier ones) and tires to match.
The used BMW market in the Laurentians and north of Montreal is dominated by a few high-volume models:

The xDrive system is BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive: it distributes torque between the axles in a few milliseconds depending on grip. For driving in Oka, Saint-Jérôme or on Highway 640 in the middle of a snowstorm, it is a real asset: confident starts, stability in corners, confidence on black ice. The vast majority of BMWs sold in Quebec are xDrive versions, and that is what we favour in our inventory.
Important: AWD does not replace winter tires. In Quebec, certified winter tires (mountain/snowflake symbol) are mandatory from December 1 to March 15. A BMW xDrive fitted with four real winter tires is unbeatable on our roads. Factor it into your budget if the vehicle arrives with all-season tires.
A premium brand like BMW is where buying from a dealership makes the most sense. With a private seller, you have no legal warranty and any hidden defect becomes your problem, which is costly on German mechanics. At BonAuto, you benefit from the legal warranty of the Consumer Protection Act, whose duration varies with the age and mileage of the vehicle (categories A to D). Read our complete guide to the LPC warranty on used vehicles to understand what you are entitled to.
On taxes, the advantage is concrete: at a dealership, the value of your trade-in is deducted from the taxable amount. On a BMW, where the sums are large, deducting the trade-in before applying the 14.975% (GST 5% + QST 9.975%) means real savings. You also leave with an inspected vehicle, a history report and a single point of contact if something goes wrong. BonAuto holds OPC licence no. 2110539-1.
Every used BMW that comes into BonAuto goes through a serious mechanical inspection, tailored to the quirks of the brand: reading codes through the OBD/BMW system, checking for oil leaks (pan, filter housing, valve cover gasket), condition of the timing chain, health of the battery and electronic modules, brakes, suspension, and proper operation of iDrive. On plug-in hybrid versions (330e, X5 xDrive50e), we also verify battery health. We give you a history report so you can buy with full transparency.
