How much tax you pay depends on where you buy. From a dealership, you pay the 5% GST and the 9.975% QST, for a total of 14.975% of the sale price. If you trade in your vehicle, its value is deducted from the taxable amount.
From a private seller, there is no GST. The SAAQ collects the 9.975% QST at registration, calculated on the higher of the price paid and the estimated value of the vehicle in the SAAQ's vehicle valuation guide (Guide d'évaluation des véhicules automobiles).
