Why buy a used Subaru from BonAuto?

  • Standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) on almost all models.
  • Boxer engine: low centre of gravity, excellent road handling.
  • Best-sellers: Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, known for reliability.
  • Ideal for the Quebec climate: cold starts, snow, ice.
  • EyeSight: advanced safety system available on recent models.
  • Mechanical inspection with attention to oil leaks (known issue before 2015).

Subaru and Quebec winters: a winning duo

Subaru fits almost all of its models with standard Symmetrical AWD, a rare advantage in the industry. Combined with the Boxer engine (horizontally opposed, so with a low centre of gravity), this architecture gives a Forester or an Outback exceptional winter stability, even on Route 117 toward Mont-Tremblant or the country roads around Oka.

For Laurentians drivers who commute daily to Montreal or Laval, it is the number 1 reason to buy: less need for aggressive winter tires, reliable cold starts, and more confidence on black ice. Combined with certified all-season tires or dedicated winter tires, that is a level of winter safety that is worth its weight in gold.

Forester, Outback, Crosstrek: the pillars of the lineup in Quebec

  • Subaru Forester: boxy compact SUV that maximizes interior space. 8.7 in of ground clearance (ideal for forest trails and unplowed driveways). 2014-2018 models (4th gen) are in high demand on the used market; 2019+ (5th gen) with standard EyeSight.
  • Subaru Outback: raised wagon that combines sedan comfort and light-SUV capability. The choice of active families who ski at St-Sauveur or bike at Oka.
  • Subaru Crosstrek: subcompact SUV based on the Impreza, with raised ground clearance. Fuel-efficient (~8 L/100 km), ideal for a young driver or an urban couple who want AWD without the costs of a full-size SUV.

We also regularly get Impreza (AWD compact), Legacy (mid-size), Ascent (3-row) and WRX (turbocharged AWD sport) models.

Subaru inspection: watch for oil leaks and coolant

On 2009-2014 Subaru models with an EJ or FB engine (before the modified FB25 arrived), there are two critical inspection points:

  • Valve cover gaskets that can seep oil on the sides of the Boxer engine
  • Water pump and coolant pipe gasketsthat deteriorate with age

Our inspection systematically checks these points on any Subaru more than 8 years old. If a preventive repair is needed before the vehicle goes on sale, we do it, so there are no surprises after the purchase. On 2015+ models and all Subarus with the FA20 engine (WRX/STI), these problems are largely resolved.

EyeSight: Subaru active safety

Subaru EyeSight is a driver-assistance system using stereo cameras (no radar) that is optional on 2015+vehicles, and standard on most trims since 2019. It provides: automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, active lane keeping and lead vehicle start alert.

For a used vehicle, it is a strong argument: EyeSight-equipped Subarus earn the best IIHS ratings(Top Safety Pick+) and insurance discounts with several Quebec insurers. During the inspection, we systematically test the camera calibration and the absence of error codes.
