Kia's 10-year / 200,000 km warranty: a real selling point

Kia is one of the few mainstream brands to offer a 10-year / 200,000 km powertrain warranty(to the first owner). For a used-vehicle buyer, that is a major advantage: if the vehicle was bought new at the dealership and has not reached 200,000 km, the warranty may still be active on the engine and transmission.

It is a safety net you rarely find in this segment, equivalent to what its sister brand Hyundai offers. Checking eligibility is part of our inspection process.

Sportage, Sorento, Forte, Soul: the Kia lineup in Quebec

• Kia Sportage: compact SUV that competes directly with the Tucson (its Hyundai sister). Redesigned for 2023 (5th gen) with a distinctive look, optional AWD and a hybrid available. 2017-2022 models (4th gen) are in high demand on the used market.
• Kia Sorento: mid-size 3-row, 7-seat SUV. The 4th gen (2021+) is offered with a 2.5L turbo engine, plus hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. Excellent for families of 4 to 7.

• Kia Soul: unique boxy hatchback with surprising interior space for its length. A Soul EV version is available (380 km range).
• Kia Telluride: full-size 8-seat SUV, named Vehicle of the Year in 2020. In high demand and rare on the used market.
• Kia Niro and EV6: accessible electrification. The EV6, built on the E-GMP architecture (ultra-fast charging), is eligible for the Roulez Vert program.

Why a used Kia is excellent value

Like Hyundai, Kia still suffers from a brand image that has not caught up with the real quality of its products. The result on the used market: a 2020 Sportage with a panoramic roof, Apple CarPlay, heated seats and AWD often sells for $3,000 less than a 2020 RAV4 with a similar configuration. And the build quality is comparable.

Kia inspection: DCT transmission and Theta II engines

Our Kia inspection pays special attention to:

• DCT (dual-clutch) transmission on some models: low-speed behaviour test, software updates
• Theta II GDI 2.0L and 2.4L engines(2011-2018): checking oil consumption and the condition of the connecting rod bearings. Several Kia recalls have covered this engine, so we check the CARFAX history and the recalls that were carried out
• Frame and underbody (corrosion)
• Air conditioning, infotainment electronics
