The Ford F-150 has dominated pickup truck sales in Canada for decades, and Quebec’s used market is full of them. On the North Shore and in the Laurentians, it’s probably the vehicle most often traded in by contractors. Two main generations sit side by side on the used market today: the twelfth (2015-2020), which introduced the all-aluminum body to lighten the truck, and the thirteenth (2021 and newer), which adds the PowerBoost hybrid powertrain and a complete interior redesign.
The aluminum body on 2015 and newer models resists corrosion better than the steel of earlier generations, a real advantage with the road salt of Quebec winters. A word of caution, though: aluminum doesn’t mean “rustproof.” The frame, brackets and fasteners are still steel and can rust. Always inspect the underside of the truck before buying.
It’s the big question for every used F-150 buyer. The 5.0 L V8 (“Coyote”) is prized for its simplicity, its sound and its reputation for long-term toughness. Many Laurentians contractors prefer it precisely because it has fewer complex parts and handles heavy work and repeated towing well.
The turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engines (2.7 L and 3.5 L) deliver impressive low-rpm torque, ideal for towing, while using a bit less fuel in normal driving. The 3.5 L EcoBoost is in fact the most capable engine in the lineup for towing. In return, a turbo engine adds components (turbos, intercooler, more plumbing) that call for rigorous maintenance. On a used EcoBoost, check the oil change history and listen to the engine on a cold start.
Our advice at BonAuto: choose based on how you’ll really use it. Frequent heavy towing and fuel economy matter to you? The 3.5 L EcoBoost. Mechanical peace of mind and hard daily work? The 5.0 L V8. Whichever you choose, always have the truck validated by a pre-purchase mechanical inspection.
If you’re buying an F-150, it’s often for its role as a workhorse. Towing capacity varies enormously with the engine, axle ratio, wheelbase and equipment (Max Trailer Tow package). Never rely on the maximum figure Ford advertises for the whole lineup: a specific used truck may tow far less. Find the payload sticker in the door jamb and, ideally, the hitch sticker to learn the real capacity of the truck in front of you.
For a Laurentians contractor hauling a trailer of materials, an ATV or a boat, 4x4 is almost essential in winter. Check that the mode selector (2H, 4H, 4L) works in every position during the test drive, and listen for any clunk when it engages. The electronic limited-slip differential, found on several versions, helps a lot on a muddy job site or a snowy parking lot.
Don’t forget: heavy towing and driving loaded wear out the brakes, suspension and transmission faster. A former commercial fleet F-150 can show low mileage but have worked hard, which is why a history report and a serious inspection matter.
The F-150 comes in three cab styles, which changes everything for daily use. The Regular Cab maximizes box length for work but offers little passenger space. The SuperCab adds small rear doors and a jump seat, a good compromise. The SuperCrew, with four real doors and generous rear space, is the most popular with families and work crews, and it also resells best in Quebec.
As for trims, you’ll come across the XL and XLT (work-oriented), the Lariat (comfort and leather), then the King Ranch, Platinum and Limited (top of the range). Also check for running boards, an already-installed hitch and a bed liner, extras that are worth something to a Quebec buyer.
The F-150 is generally recognized as reliable, but like any pickup that works hard, some points deserve attention when buying used. On EcoBoost engines, watch for coolant leaks and the condition of the spark plugs (the first-generation 3.5 L had a reputation in this respect). On every engine, check the condition of the transmission (smooth shifts, no jerking), the driver assistance modules and that the backup camera works properly.
For Quebec winters, inspect the frame, brake lines and exhaust lines carefully for corrosion, especially on 2015-2018 trucks. Take the opportunity to plan on buying winter tires, mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15; on a truck this heavy, it’s an expense to plan for in advance. For your maintenance budget, expect costs a bit higher than a sedan: bigger brakes, pricier tires, higher fuel consumption.
