Volkswagen: German engineering at an accessible price

Volkswagen is one of the few manufacturers to offer German build quality in the mainstream segment, between the mass-market brands (Toyota, Honda) and the premium brands (Audi, BMW, Mercedes). On the used market, that gives you the advantage of a vehicle with European handling (precise steering, firm suspension, superior sound insulation) at the price of a Japanese compact.

Tiguan, Jetta and Atlas are the pillars of the Quebec lineup. The Golf and Passat are no longer produced for the North American market, so they are rare used but still available.

Tiguan, Jetta, Atlas: the most sought-after Volkswagens

• Volkswagen Tiguan: compact SUV, 2018+ version (2nd gen North American), longer with an optional 3rd row. 4Motion AWD available. Efficient 2.0L TSI turbo engine + DSG or conventional transmission.
• Volkswagen Jetta: compact sedan, redesigned for 2019 (7th gen) with an economical 1.4L TSI engine (6.8 L/100 km). Digital instrument cluster available on the higher trims.
• Volkswagen Atlas: full-size 7-seat SUV, built in the United States. 4Motion AWD available, V6 or 2.0L turbo engines. A direct rival to the Pilot and the Pathfinder.
• Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI: compact hatchback, the GTI being the benchmark sport version. North American production stopped in 2022, so any used Golf is becoming a rarity.
• Volkswagen ID.4: electric SUV (MEB architecture). Range of 350-450 km depending on the battery. Eligible for Roulez Vert.
• Volkswagen Taos: subcompact SUV, an economical alternative to the Tiguan. Optional AWD.

VW inspection: TSI engines and DSG transmission

Volkswagens have mechanical particularities that call for a targeted inspection:

• 2.0L TSI engines: turbo pressure, oil leaks (the valve cover gasket is known to seep after 100,000 km), condition of the timing chain
• DSG (dual-clutch) transmission: low-speed behaviour test, check of the maintenance schedule (DSG fluid change every 60,000 km, often forgotten and can kill the transmission)
• Ignition coils: a historic weak point, we replace them if suspect
• Frame and body (German assembly quality is generally well preserved)
