Toyota RAV4 generations on Quebec’s used market

The RAV4 is the best-selling compact SUV in Canada, and it shows in Quebec’s used listings: you come across thousands, from the 4th generation (2013-2018) to recent models. The 4th generation marked the move to the naturally aspirated 2.5 L four-cylinder engine and the end of the spare wheel mounted on the liftgate, with a 2016 refresh that added Apple CarPlay late in the cycle.

The 5th generation (2019 and newer, TNGA platform) is the one we recommend most often: a stiffer chassis, more composed driving, and above all the arrival of the RAV4 Hybrid, which established itself as a best-seller in the province. The RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid, launched for 2021) adds an electric range of about 68 km and surprising acceleration. On these years, you’ll find the LE, XLE, Trail/TRD Off-Road and Limited versions and, on the hybrid side, LE, XLE, XSE and Limited.

  • 2013-2018: 4th gen, 2.5 L gasoline, a safe and affordable choice
  • 2019-2024: 5th gen, boxier look, improved AWD
  • Hybrid: in high demand, real savings in town during winter
  • Prime (PHEV): drive electric for short trips, gasoline for long ones

Reliability and known issues by generation

The RAV4 has a largely deserved reputation for reliability, mainly thanks to the proven 2.5 L four-cylinder found in various forms for more than a decade. It isn’t a perfect vehicle, though, and knowing the real weak points helps you buy better used.

On the 4th generation, the engine and automatic transmission rarely cause problems; watch instead for wear on suspension components after a few winters of Quebec potholes and the condition of the heating system. On the 5th generation gasoline (2019-2020), some owners have reported fuel consumption higher than expected and, more rarely, transmission noises when cold: a test drive in cool weather is useful. On the RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota’s hybrid system is very robust, but validate the condition of the high-voltage battery and the maintenance history.

As with any recent SUV, have it verified that the manufacturer recalls have been carried out. A serious inspection makes all the difference: see our advice on a pre-purchase mechanical inspection in Quebec.

AWD and winter driving: why the RAV4 appeals to Quebec

A good part of the RAV4’s popularity in Quebec comes from its optional all-wheel drive (AWD), much appreciated on the snowy roads and icy hills of the North Shore and the Laurentians. AWD versions send torque to the rear as needed; on the hybrids, an electric motor dedicated to the rear axle (electronic AWD) kicks in instantly, which helps when starting on a slippery surface.

A word of caution: AWD helps with traction but doesn’t replace tires. In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15. Ask whether the vehicle comes with a second set of tires or winter rims, and check the condition of the 12 V battery, which suffers in extreme cold.

What to check when buying used, and maintenance costs

When buying a used RAV4, take the time to check a few key points: the maintenance history (oil changes respected, especially on hybrids), the condition of the brakes and suspension after several winters, the presence of rust under the vehicle and around the wheel wells, and that the multimedia screen and the AWD work properly. On the Prime, confirm that the charging cable is included and that the battery still holds a decent charge.

For your budget, the RAV4 stands out for a reasonable maintenance cost: common parts, mechanicals known to shops, and long service intervals. The hybrid uses noticeably less fuel in town, which offsets its higher purchase price over time. Also think about the taxes on purchase: at a dealership like BonAuto, it’s GST 5% + QST 9.975% (14.975%), and a vehicle given as a trade-in reduces the taxable amount. Estimate it all with our used vehicle tax calculator.

  • Maintenance history and service log
  • Condition of the high-voltage battery (hybrid / Prime)
  • Rust and corrosion under the vehicle
  • Winter tires included or not
