The Civic generations you’ll see in Quebec

The Honda Civic has been one of Quebec’s best-selling compacts for decades, which is exactly why it’s easy to find used: the more common a car is, the bigger the pool of good ones. On today’s pre-owned market, two generations dominate the listings.

  • 10th generation (2016-2021): the Civic’s big turning point, with a stiffer chassis, a longer and lower silhouette, and the arrival of the small 1.5L turbo alongside the naturally aspirated 2.0L. Offered as a sedan, a hatchback (from 2017) and the sporty Si and Type R versions.
  • 11th generation (2022 and newer): a more mature interior redesign, a modernized screen and instrument cluster, the Honda Sensing suite of driver aids as standard, and a hybrid powertrain added in the most recent years. Sedans and hatchbacks from this generation are only just starting to reach the used market.

Before the 10th generation, there are still plenty of very affordable 9th-generation Civics (2012-2015): they remain a good budget choice, but expect higher mileage and less complete safety equipment. At BonAuto, we steer you toward the generation that really fits your budget and how you drive.

Trims and sporty versions

The Civic comes in several trims, from the simplest to the best equipped: LX and EX cover most of the Quebec fleet, while Sport, Touring and the Sport Touring hatchbacks add a sunroof, heated seats, navigation and larger wheels. For drivers who want fun behind the wheel, two names come up:

  • Civic Si: the accessible sport version, with a more generous turbo engine and a manual gearbox, a firmer suspension and a limited-slip differential. A reliable enthusiast’s car for everyday driving.
  • Civic Type R: the most extreme front-wheel-drive car in the lineup, with a high-performance turbo engine, aggressive aerodynamics and oversized brakes. Highly sought after and rarer on the used market, so it deserves particularly careful inspection (use and maintenance).

If a specific trim interests you but it isn’t in stock, send a vehicle search request: we track the vehicle down for you instead of pushing whatever we have on hand.

Reliability and known issues by generation

The Civic has an excellent reputation for durability, but like any car, it has things worth knowing about depending on the engine. The goal isn’t to put you off: it’s to tell you what to check so you can buy with confidence.

  • 1.5L turbo engine: on some 10th-generation Civics, cases of fuel diluting the oil have been reported, especially on short trips in very cold weather (a typical Quebec scenario). Honda has released software updates to reduce the problem. When buying: check the oil level and any smell of gasoline in the oil, and confirm that recalls and updates have been applied.
  • 2.0L naturally aspirated engine: known to be very robust and simpler to maintain. An excellent choice if you want peace of mind before performance.
  • Transmission: the CVT is smooth and fuel-efficient; we simply make sure the fluid has been serviced. Manual versions (Si, Type R, some hatchbacks) call for a normal clutch check.
  • Bodywork in Quebec: road salt is enemy number one. We inspect the underbody, rocker panels and wheel wells for corrosion, and check the condition of the paint on older vehicles.

Every Civic we offer goes through a mechanical inspection. To understand how it works, read our guide to the pre-purchase mechanical inspection in Quebec.

What to check on a used Civic

Beyond the mechanics, a few simple habits avoid bad surprises on a compact as widely used as the Civic:

  • Maintenance log: regular oil changes (crucial on the 1.5L turbo), CVT service, brakes and tires.
  • Vehicle history: history report, check for reported accidents and confirmation that Honda recalls have been done.
  • Electronics and driver aids: on models with Honda Sensing, we test the adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and cameras.
  • Winter tires: in Quebec, they’re mandatory from December 1 to March 15; ask whether they’re included or need to be budgeted for.
  • Mileage consistency: high mileage isn’t a defect on a well-maintained Civic, but it should be consistent with the overall condition and the price.

For financing, even with imperfect credit, we have solutions: see our options for tough-credit financing.

Maintenance costs, taxes and your real budget

One of the Civic’s great strengths is its low cost of ownership: plentiful and affordable parts, modest fuel consumption (especially on the turbo and hybrid versions), and a large network of shops that know it inside out. Basic maintenance comes down to oil changes (slightly more frequent on the 1.5L turbo given Quebec’s cold), brakes, tires and CVT fluid.

For your total budget, don’t forget taxes. When you buy from a dealership, GST of 5% and QST of 9.975% apply, for a total of 14.975%, and a vehicle given as a trade-in reduces the taxable amount. From a private seller, there is no GST, but the 9.975% QST is collected by the SAAQ on the higher of the price paid and the estimated value. To work out your exact case, use our used vehicle tax calculator for Quebec.

In short, the Civic remains one of the most sensible compacts to own in Quebec, winter and summer.
