Hybrid or electric car? Hybrid or electric car? Hybrid or electric car? Quebec is one of the provinces where electrification is moving the fastest, thanks to affordable hydroelectricity and government rebates. But conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid or 100% electric: which one suits how you drive?

1. The 3 types of electrified powertrains

Conventional hybrid (HEV)

Combines a combustion engine and a small electric motor. No need to plug in: the electric motor recharges while driving and braking.

  • Fuel consumption: 4.5 to 6.5 L/100 km on average (-30 to -40% vs gasoline).
  • Examples: Toyota Prius, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Honda Insight, Lexus RX 450h.
  • No government rebate.
  • Ideal for: those who don't want to plug in.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

A hybrid with a bigger battery that recharges at a charging station. Runs in 100% electric mode over short distances, then switches to hybrid.

  • Electric range: 40-80 km depending on the model.
  • Examples: Toyota RAV4 Prime (68 km EV), Hyundai Tucson PHEV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
  • Rebate: $4,000 provincial + $5,000 federal = $9,000 (on eligible vehicles, 2026).
  • Ideal for: daily commute < 50 km + occasional trips.

100% electric (BEV)

No combustion engine. Charging is required at home or along the way.

  • Range: 250 to 600 km depending on the model.
  • Examples: Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq 5.
  • Rebate: $4,000 provincial + $5,000 federal = $9,000 on eligible new models.
  • Fuel savings: ~80% cheaper than a gasoline vehicle.
  • Ideal for: a home with a 240 V charger, regular planned trips.

2. Real total cost over 5 years (estimate, example: 25,000 km/year)

TypeFuel/EnergyMaintenance5-year total
Gasoline (8 L/100 km)~$12,000~$5,000$17,000
Hybrid (5 L/100 km)~$7,500~$4,000$11,500
PHEV (with charging)~$3,500~$3,500$7,000
100% electric~$2,000~$2,500$4,500

3. Quebec climate considerations

  • Reduced range in winter: expect -25 to -35% in very cold weather. An EV advertised at 400 km drops to 280 km at -20 °C.
  • Preheating: essential on EVs. Preheating the cabin while charging avoids a collapse in range.
  • Home charger: $1,000-2,500 installed for a 240 V unit. Full charge in 6-10 h.
  • Public network: Circuit Électrique (Hydro-Québec) is the densest. 4,000+ charging stations in Quebec.

4. 2026 government rebates

  • Roulez vert (provincial): $4,000 for eligible new BEV/PHEV. Adjusted to $2,000 for used.
  • iVZE (federal): $5,000 for new BEV, $2,500 for PHEV (price < $55,000).
  • Home charger: $600 provincial for the installation (Roulez vert).

5. Our recommendation

  • Daily commute < 80 km, home with a garage: 100% electric. Maximum savings.
  • Variable commute, occasional long distances: PHEV. The ideal compromise.
  • No home charger, no desire to manage charging : conventional hybrid (HEV). Toyota Prius or RAV4 Hybrid.

See our used hybrid vehicles. A used hybrid is often an excellent compromise: the battery has already been broken in and the price is more accessible.
