Choosing one of the most reliable used cars means choosing peace of mind. We compiled the top 10 most reliable used vehicles in Quebec, based on Consumer Reports, J.D. Power and our hands-on experience.
1. Toyota Corolla
The undisputed compact. The 1.8 L engine has very few problems and easily reaches 400,000 km with minimal maintenance. Economical on fuel (6.5 L/100 km). What to look for: 2017+ with a manual transmission or CVT.
2. Honda Civic
A versatile compact that is fun to drive. 2016+ versions with the 1.5 L turbo engine are more powerful. Be slightly cautious with 2017-2018 CVTs, but overall very reliable. See our Hondas.
3. Toyota RAV4
#1 best-selling compact SUV in Canada. 2019+ hybrid versions are exceptional: 5.8 L/100 km on average. Capable in winter with AWD.
4. Mazda CX-5
Excellent value for money in the compact SUV segment. Premium interior, pleasant to drive, solid reliability. Prefer 2017+ versions with G-Vectoring.
5. Honda CR-V
The reliable family SUV par excellence. Generous space, reasonable fuel consumption, very few problems. Avoid 2017-2018 (1.5 L turbo engine issue in cold weather, fixed in 2019).
6. Subaru Forester / Outback
Standard all-wheel drive on all models, ideal for Quebec. Durable boxer engine, but watch for oil leaks on older models (before 2015).
7. Toyota Camry
Ultra-reliable mid-size sedan. Remarkably economical hybrid versions (5.5 L/100 km). High-level comfort and quietness.
8. Lexus ES / RX
For those who want luxury without sacrificing reliability. Maintenance costs slightly higher than Toyota but exceptional build quality.
9. Hyundai Tucson
A compact SUV well equipped for the price. The 10-year/200,000 km powertrain warranty (on the original vehicle) is very reassuring. 2019+ models recommended. See our Hyundais.
10. Toyota Tacoma
Mid-size compact pickup truck: the most reliable in its class. Exceptional resale value. See our pickup trucks.
The criteria we used
- Long-term reliability: problem rate over 5+ years (Consumer Reports).
- Maintenance costs: parts, labour, frequency of breakdowns.
- Resale value: percentage of value retained after 5 years.
- Suitability for the Quebec climate: cold starts, traction, body durability.
What to remember
Toyota and Honda dominate the ranking. Mazda and Subaru are solid alternatives. Hyundai and Kia have made huge progress and are now competitive. Avoid European brands (BMW, Audi, VW) on the used market unless you have a sizeable maintenance budget.
Our inventory is updated every week, and many reliable models can be found there. Request a vehicle search if you are looking for a specific model.
