Car loan pre-approval is the step that gives you negotiating power. You walk into the dealership with a rate and an amount already confirmed, and no more uncertainty.

1. Pre-qualification vs pre-approval

  • Pre-qualification: a quick estimate based on self-declared information. No impact on your credit score. Not guaranteed, it is only indicative.
  • Pre-approval: a full credit check. The lender commits to an amount and a rate. Slight impact (-2 to -5 points) that recovers within a few months.

2. Timelines

  • Submitting the online form: 2 minutes.
  • Pre-qualification answer: a few hours to 24 h.
  • Final pre-approval: 1 to 3 business days.
  • Validity of the confirmed rate: generally 30 to 60 days.

3. Documents you need

To speed up the process, get these ready:

  • Driver's licence and SIN (social insurance number).
  • Your 2 latest pay stubs (or T4 if self-employed).
  • Proof of address (utility bill).
  • A list of your other current loans (auto, mortgage, lines of credit).
  • If applicable: bankruptcy discharge/proposal papers.

4. What affects your rate

Four main factors:

  1. Credit score (Equifax/TransUnion).
  2. Debt-to-income ratio (ideally < 40%).
  3. Job stability (1 year+ with the same employer = better).
  4. Down payment (it reduces the amount financed and can lower the rate).

5. Strategy: rate shopping without wrecking your credit

Equifax and TransUnion treat all auto inquiries made within 14 days as a single inquiry. So you can shop around with several lenders without an extra penalty.

Better still: go through a dealership that submits to several lenders at once. That is what we do at BonAuto: a single application, several lenders consulted.

6. Common mistakes

  • Not disclosing all your income, including under-the-table income, pension, benefits. More income = better rate.
  • Lying about your debts: the lender sees them in the credit bureau. Lying = automatic refusal.
  • Asking for a vehicle that is too expensive for your means: aim for a payment under 15% of your net income.
